“I like to think of landscape not as a fixed place but as a path that is unwinding before my eyes, under my feet” – Gretal Ehrlich.
During this term I have researched and experiment with different ideas to make interesting composition in painting and collage. I went through different ways of coming up ideas that would keep me interested in painting and help me when I do hit a mental block. I found that stepping back from a painting is more beneficial than continuing with it.
I used different materials during the term but was mainly paper and boards. Finding out what different materials do to the paint. I recently started working on canvas to see the different effect it does to the colour of the paint. Whiter it dulls the paint or makes it brighter. I like to use the bright colours but also to find away to make the collage more involved in the painting rather than just sticking it on. I found if I take pieces from photos or magazines I can making interesting composition and break away for the traditional landscape which I was doing at the beginning.
I will eventually move on to oil and see what effects I can get from the paint that I can’t get from acrylic. I like to continue with the experimenting to find a way to make the paint and the collage work as one but to keep interesting juxtaposition landscapes. That is otherworldly to the viewer but to me is based in reality.
