Arlene Roan
b. 1987
Arlene Roan works part time in a pharmacy dispensing and disposing tablets and medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. These tablets are removed from their foil and put into vials. During this operation Arlene became aware of the blaze of colour they created, some blues, pinks, purples, yellows, reds and these triggered the idea for this body of work.
After permission to photograph the tablets was granted the photographs were taken, printed, selected, discarded and repeated again and again. These images became the source material for abstract paintings using some of the colours of the tablets in favourite combinations. Using a mix of painting, photography and “fake” tablets the various strands of research suggest the seduction and promise of medications in contemporary life.
Thanks to Tina Geraghty, of Molloy’s Lifestyle Pharmacy Roscommon, for granting permission for the photography under her guided supervision – much appreciated.
